India HS code lookup

Find the Indian ITC-HS code for a product, the basic customs duty and whether an import licence is needed, by code or by describing the goods.

Updated weekly from the published tariff schedule. Duty rates are indicative; confirm with customs before filing.

How HS codes work in India

Every product entering India is classified under an ITC-HS code. The first six digits are the same worldwide; India adds two of its own, so a code here runs to eight. The code decides the basic customs duty, whether the goods need an import licence, and the GST rate charged on import.

Duty

Basic customs duty varies widely by heading — from nil on some inputs to high rates on finished goods — and a surcharge and cess may be added on top. The lookup shows the published basic rate for the heading; the total at the border depends on the goods and any trade agreement that applies.

GST on import

Integrated GST is charged on import at the goods’ own GST rate, on the customs value plus duty.

Permits

Goods are free to import unless the heading is restricted or prohibited; a restricted heading needs an import licence before customs will release it — the lookup shows which.

Getting it wrong

A wrong code means the wrong duty, a held shipment, or a bill of entry customs sends back. Searching by description and checking the heading’s wording is the quickest way to find the right one; the code goes on the bill of entry exactly as the tariff spells it.

Questions about India HS codes

How many digits does an Indian HS code have?

Eight. The first six are the international heading; the last two are India’s own ITC-HS subdivisions.

Is the duty rate here the one customs will charge?

It is the published basic rate for the heading and is indicative. Surcharges, cess and trade agreements change the total; customs decides on the bill of entry, so confirm before filing.

Can I search by product name?

Yes. Type what the goods are and the lookup finds the headings whose wording matches.

Does the lookup cover the UAE and Saudi Arabia?

Yes, each on its own page with that country’s tariff, digits and duty rates.

Put the code on the declaration, not in a spreadsheet

CargoSurge's customs module files the declaration with the code checked, tracks the duty and the permit, and reconciles the deposit.
