Road freight overview

How the road module handles trips, legs, vehicles, drivers, and subcontractors.

The road module runs domestic and cross-border trucking: FTL, LTL, container drayage, and last-mile. It sits alongside the air and sea modules and shares customers, quotes, and invoicing with them.

The three record types

  • Shipment — what the customer booked. Has origin, destination, cargo, commercial terms. Same record type used across air / sea / road.
  • Trip — a vehicle's journey from a start point to an end point on a given day. Carries one or more shipments or shipment legs.
  • Leg — a slice of a shipment's journey. LTL shipments often have multiple legs across multiple trips (pickup → terminal → linehaul → terminal → delivery).

A single shipment can span multiple trips; a single trip can serve multiple shipments. The platform handles both directions cleanly — see trips & legs.

Supported load types

  • FTL — full truckload, one customer per trip.
  • LTL — less-than-truckload, consolidated cargo across multiple customers.
  • Container — 20ft / 40ft / 45ft containers moved between port and yard / customer (drayage).
  • Parcel / last-mile — many small stops per trip, typically used with the driver mobile app.

Core flows

  1. Quote → rate card pulls road-specific charges (see quotation-road).
  2. Book → shipment created with a road service mode.
  3. Plan → a dispatcher attaches the shipment to a trip on the dispatch board.
  4. Execute → driver accepts trip on the mobile app, updates status stop-by-stop.
  5. Prove → POD captured on delivery. See POD.
  6. Invoice → charges booked against the shipment(s) and passed to finance.

Owned vs subcontracted

The module handles both your own fleet and hired trucks. Subcontractor trips look almost identical to own-fleet trips on the dispatch board, with additional fields for vendor, vendor trip id, and vendor cost. See subcontractors.
