Locations and bins

How warehouse space is modelled: zones, aisles, racks, bins.

A warehouse is a tree of locations. The leaves — bins — are where stock actually lives.

Hierarchy

  • Warehouse — top level (e.g. WH-DXB-01).
  • Zone — floor area (e.g. receiving, bulk, pick, reserve, quarantine, hazmat, temperature).
  • Aisle — rows within a zone.
  • Rack — a shelving column within an aisle.
  • Level — shelf height on the rack.
  • Bin — a single addressable slot.

You don't have to use every layer; small warehouses can skip aisle/rack and go zone → bin.

Bin properties

  • Code — unique, barcoded. E.g. A-01-02-03 = aisle A, rack 01, level 02, position 03.
  • Type — pallet, case-pick, each-pick, floor, overflow, quarantine.
  • Dimensions + weight capacity.
  • Temperature range — ambient / chilled / frozen.
  • Restrictions — hazmat class allowed, food-grade only, dedicated-to-customer.
  • Status — available, full, blocked.

Bin properties drive putaway suggestions — see putaway.

Zones that are special

  • Receiving zone — default landing for inbound before putaway.
  • Staging zone — pre-shipping, after pick + pack.
  • Quarantine — damaged / suspect stock; ring-fenced from normal availability.
  • Hazmat zones — per ADR class, with segregation rules.
  • Returns — inbound returns awaiting inspection.

Labels

Every bin has a barcode label. The platform generates printable labels (Zebra / Brother formats) from /app/warehouse/bins/labels. Relabelling a bin requires unique code — duplicates are blocked.

Creating / editing

Bulk-create from CSV: define the grid (aisles × racks × levels × positions) and the platform generates all bins. Individual edits for exceptions.

WAREHOUSE_ADMIN role required for create / edit. Operators only view.
