Warehouse mobile app

Handheld scanner and phone workflows: receiving, putaway, picking, counting.

2 min readLast updated 13 Apr 2026

Warehouse work happens on a scanner, not a desk. The mobile app supports Android handhelds (Zebra TC, Honeywell CT) and phones with barcode scanning via camera.

App login via username + PIN or QR-based shift badge. Sessions persist per shift; auto-logout after inactivity (configurable).

Each login is tied to a warehouse + role: the app shows only the tasks relevant to that user's role.

Home screen

Lists open task counts by category:

  • Receiving.
  • Putaway.
  • Picking.
  • Packing.
  • Counts.
  • Moves / transfers.

Tap a category to get the next task (or a list, per tenant).

Task flow

Every task follows the same pattern:

  1. Scan to start — scan the bin / tote / pallet that anchors the task.
  2. Scan to validate — scan the SKU / second location.
  3. Enter / confirm — quantity, lot, serial.
  4. Complete — task closes, next task loads.

Minimal typing; designed for gloved hands and 12-hour shifts.

Offline

Tasks queue locally when connectivity drops. Sync as soon as it's back. The handheld shows a sync indicator — stale > 5 min is surfaced.

Messages

Supervisor → operator messages land in the app. Broadcast (all in zone) and direct (one operator). Used for reassignments, safety alerts.

Productivity

Every task is timestamped. The app feeds a productivity dashboard at /app/warehouse/performance:

  • Picks / hour.
  • Putaways / hour.
  • Accuracy %.
  • Idle time.

Productivity data feeds labour planning.

Safety

The app enforces safety rules where it can:

  • Two-handed lifts above a weight threshold prompt a second operator.
  • Hazmat bins trigger a PPE prompt before opening.
  • High-rack picks require a MHE (forklift / order-picker) operator licence.

Beyond that, good supervision still matters — the app assists, doesn't replace, floor management.
