FX revaluation

FX revaluation accounting: revalue open foreign-currency receivables, payables and bank balances to month-end rates and post the unrealised gain or loss.

Open AR and AP balances in foreign currency drift vs home currency between posting date and settlement. Month-end revaluation updates balances to month-end rates.

What's revalued

  • Open AR invoices (not fully paid).
  • Open AP bills (not fully paid).
  • Foreign-currency bank balances.
  • Accruals in foreign currency.

Settled transactions are not re-revalued — the settled FX is final.

How

  1. On month-end close, the platform fetches month-end rates from the configured FX provider.
  2. For each open balance: recalc home-currency value at month-end rate. Difference vs previous period posts as unrealized FX gain or unrealized FX loss.
  3. On subsequent settlement, the difference between month-end carrying value and settlement rate posts as realised FX gain / loss (adjusted for the prior unrealised).

Net result: P&L FX over time reconciles cleanly.

Triggering

  • Automatic at month-end close (configurable: last day of month / first business day of next month).
  • Manual trigger at /app/finance/month-end → Run FX revaluation.
  • Dry-run mode — preview the postings before committing.

Policy options

  • Monthly — standard.
  • Daily — rare, for very high-volume multi-currency traders.
  • Quarterly — for small tenants with minimal FX exposure.

Set in tenant finance settings.

Accounts

Unrealised FX and realised FX typically post to separate P&L accounts:

  • Unrealised FX Gain / Loss — non-cash, balance-sheet movement.
  • Realised FX Gain / Loss — cash, on settlement.

Mapping configurable per tenant chart of accounts. See admin / chart-of-accounts.

Reversals

Unrealised revaluation from the prior period is reversed at the start of the new period (standard accounting). Automatic.

Reporting

The month-end pack includes an FX revaluation schedule: per-currency balance pre-reval, reval amount, post-reval balance. Auditors expect this.
